Abstract
As natural plant-based industry has been expanded, the use of oriental medicinal plants as cosmeceutical material received a lot of attentions in the cosmetic industry. This study was performed to investigate the ameliorating effect of cosmetic materials that bamboo shoots peel (BSP) or bamboo shoots flesh (BSF) extracts. After extraction of BSP or BSF, biological evaluation including anti-oxidative activity, anti-wrinkle, whitening effect, moisturizing effect was performed. As a result, among BSP and BSF, 5% ethanol extract of BSP exerted stronger scavenging activity against DPPH, ABTS and lipid peroxidation than others. In addition, total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of 5% ethanol extract of BSP was higher than that of BSF and other extracted BSP. This result indicates that extraction of BSP using 5% ethanol elevated anti-oxidative activity. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase was evaluated by whitening and anti-wrinkle effect of 5% ethanol extracts of BSP. However, no statistically significant difference was observed in whitening and anti-wrinkle between 5% ethanol extract of BSP treated group and negative control group. On the other hand, in the moisture contents of BSP and skin moisturizing test, the 5% ethanol extracts of BSP showed higher moisturizing effect than the positive control group using 5% glycerin. These results suggest that the BSP extract is worthy of further investigation as a protective material for skin by oxidizing agents and dry condition.
